Susan Howell has added the 'ukulele to her family of instruments and can’t stop playing. She has been a member of the Seattle Ukulele Players Association (SUPA) since its formation and joins the group to play for various fun events. Check them out. She is also a member of the Happy Campers, a group that plays mostly for people in retirement homes. They feature ukes and sing popular standards of the 40’s and 50’s. Susan’s specialty is teaching. She taught all subjects to grade-schoolers for 20 years, mountain dulcimer to adults for more than a dozen years and loves getting people started on the ‘ukulele. Susan says: "Mastering the ‘ukulele involves learning strums, chords and where the notes are, as well as transposing and arranging songs and tunes on the uke. I can teach you all of these. I have hundreds of songs available to teach you how to play, with a special fondness for songs from the 30’s-60’s. Playing the ‘ukulele is fun. It can be as easy or complicated as you want. I teach beginners and intermediate uke players. Even if you’ve never played a stringed instrument I can get you hooked on the ‘ukulele. Aloha shirts optional."
Many uke aficionados are tempted to collect any 4-string instrument that comes their way, and Susan tries to resist unless she "needs" a different size or style. Susan’s favorites are her gypsy jazz ‘ukulele (Po Mahina) and Fluke. Her concert-sized Bushman has frequent flyer miles, having been an indispensable companion in Guatemala, the Bahamas, Mexico and Jamaica.
